Dear Members;
The season is starting off strong here at the Resort and I want to thank you for your continued support. This past week, our Men’s League Stag and Women’s League Kick-Off dinners had great turn outs along with the golf course hosting the Iowa PGA Cup Matches. Over the weekend, The LPA Annual Meeting was held along with Fin and Feather having a record turnout Saturday night for their event. The weekend came to an end with the Mother’s Day Brunch serving close to 500 people.
The golf course continues to improve in condition after the long cold winter. Currently, the main lines of the new irrigation system are done and they are moving forward with sprinkler heads one hole at a time. The hole that the irrigation workers will be on will be closed Monday – Thursday. Please check in the pro shop to find out which hole will be closed for that day. We apologize for this inconvenience, but the completed irrigation system will be great. Tomorrow, the maintenance crew will be deep tining and top dressing the greens. Please check in the pro shop to find out which side the crew will be on.
If you haven’t driven by Spikes lately, you have missed the project moving along nicely. Last week, parts of the roof were installed along with the beautiful cupola. Each day the building is looking better and better. I would like to thank everyone for their support and donations to the project and we are looking forward to the grand opening.
This coming Friday is the 2nd Friday Couples of the year and better weather is in store. The GCSB 24/7@Home Lake Panorama Realty Member Guest is June 7th and 8th. If you haven't signed up already, you have until May 14 to sign up for the Member Guest. Please give Gary or Mike a call at the pro shop to sign up for these events.
The staff and I are looking forward to another great year at Lake Panorama National Resort and I hope to see you on the golf course or up in the Links.
Sincerely,
John Dinnebier GM
SPIKES WILL OFFER NEW VIEWS, NEW FOODS
By Susan Thompson

Good progress continues to be made on the new building, which has been named Spikes, between the #1 and #10 holes on the Lake Panorama National Golf Course. The private fundraising campaign to finance a new snack and restroom facility got underway last October. Since then, more than $120,000 in cash and another $30,000 in donated material and labor has been committed to the project.
The old building Spikes is replacing was burned March 1 by the Panora Fire Department. Concrete for the basement walls was poured March 24. Floor trusses and walls for the main portion of the building were framed shortly thereafter. The building features 26 windows, which were installed the first week in May.
Sheeting for the peaked roof over the center portion of the building was installed May 8. Leif and Cathy Eng, Lake Panorama residents who own Exterior Sheet Metal, Inc. of Grimes, have donated materials and labor for the center roof as well as siding for the building.
Two Lake Panorama couples are making the remaining roof portions possible. There are flat roofs over the snack area on the south and restrooms on the north, plus portions of the patio on the east and deck on the west. Jack and Sheila Beavers donated the roofing material, while labor and some additional material is being provided by Drake Roofing, owned by Dick and Joyce Groom.
Six small oak tables and 36 chairs have been purchased for the indoor seating area. The snack shop section includes more cooler, counter and storage space than the old facility. A variety of small kitchen appliances will make it possible to offer additional food options such as breakfast items, pizza, a broader array of sandwiches, crockpot soups and more. An onsite coffeemaker and an ice tea machine will make it easier to offer these beverages, which in the past had to be brought from the Conference Center.
Installation of a 50’ x 12’ deck on the west with a view of Lake Panorama began May 6. A patio on the east with a view of the golf course will feature an outdoor grill donated by Orville and Kathleen Leinen. The restrooms will have entrances from both the interior and exterior so these facilities can remain open when the rest of the building is closed.
The building will have heat and air conditioning for year-round use, and will be available for rental during the off-season.
Donations still are being solicited to help cover the cost of an ice machine, tables and chairs for the outdoor seating areas and other expenses. There are individual, in-kind and corporate-giving options. Those who give $500 or more will be recognized on a large display in the new building, but donations of any size are welcome and will make a difference.
The corporate giving option is geared to businesses and groups interested in signing a term contract for tax-deductible advertising on the LPN golf course. Sponsors for nine golf holes have been established, leaving nine holes still available for sponsorships. Businesses interested in advertising, or individuals or businesses interested in discussing in-kind contributions, can contact Contner at 641-755-2301, or Judy.Contner@supportlpa.com.
Checks should be made payable to the LPN Building Fund and are deposited in a special account designated for the new building. Donations may be dropped off at the LPN Conference Center reception area or the LPA office. Or mailed to the LPN at 5071 Clover Ridge Road, Panora, Iowa, 50216.
Spring rains and cold temperatures have made it difficult to predict when the building will be open for business, although progress the past few weeks is promising. Until Spikes opens, food and beverage items are available in a nearby trailer that is on loan from the Jamaica Lions Club.

Lake Panorama National 2008 Adopt-a-bed Volunteer Project
Be careful not to get your hopes up, but I think spring is finally here!
As long as there are so many changes going on this year at LPNGC, we might as well add one more. Since I have a full time job at Guthrie County State Bank I don’t have the time (or energy) needed to do a good job landscaping on the golf course. I really didn’t want to give up working on the course, so the last two summers I tried to work evenings and weekends, but it wasn’t enough to keep the landscaping up the way it should be.
So we found a good replacement – I’m passing my trowel on to Janis Hochreiter. She has a lot of good ideas and lots of energy (and has a better summer schedule to get out and work). Janis will be great!! We are going to continue with the adopt-a-bed program.
Last year, we had so many great volunteers (I can’t thank all of you enough) and many have signed back up to take a bed again. There are several beds still available for adoption. Janis is working up a new list and will send a note out for people still interested in taking care of a bed.
Thanks for so many years of support, but I ‘m not totally gone. I’m worried that I will have a dirt withdrawal, so I’ve kept a couple beds to work on yet this summer. I’ll see you out on the golf course.
We appreciate all the work done last year! Here is a list of those that adopted beds in 2008. If you see any of them, tell them thanks for getting the project off to such a great start!
