April 16, 2008 LPN Newsletter

Dear Members;

Well it looks as though Spring is here and the weather is beginning to cooperate. Old man winter is loosing its grip and I am crossing my fingers that the golf season will be kicking into high gear.

As most of you are aware, the First Tee is under construction and Mike Lowe and crew are doing a wonderful job. Irrigation is moving along nicely and hopefully in a couple of months, both projects will be complete.

The long and cold winter season has left a mark on the golf course. The greens and tee boxes have came through the winter very well but the fairways weren't so lucky. With the ice, snow, and cold temperatures, the fairways aren't looking as good as normal. Dan and Brandon are seeding as I type and with some sun and rain they should return to form.

The Links Restaurant and Lounge continues to be a popular place to dine and Friday’s are superb. Thanks in advance of your support of the LPN.

I look forward to seeing everyone soon and lets make 2008 our best year ever. As always, I would welcome any comments or concerns.

Sincerely,

John Dinnebier GM

NEW BUILDING AT LAKE PANORAMA NATIONAL OFF TO FAST START

The first physical evidence a new building on the Lake Panorama National Golf Course would be a reality in 2008 occurred March 1. That’s when the Panora Fire Department conducted a training exercise by burning down the old pro shop/starter shack located between the #1 and #10 holes.

Within a few days, Lake Panorama Association staff had the site cleared and ready for construction. Mike Lowe is the general contractor for the project.

The private fundraising campaign to finance a new snack and restroom facility got underway last October. Since then, nearly $115,000 in cash and another $25,000 in donated material and labor has been committed to the project. The building has been named “Spikes.”

Planning and fundraising has been conducted by the six-member LPN Advisory Committee, LPN General Manager John Dinnebier and LPA Office Manager Judy Contner. In February, the group voted to add an unfinished basement to the project to provide storage and space for mechanical equipment. Concrete for the basement walls was poured March 24.

The new building will feature a central seating area, plus two covered outdoor seating areas — a deck on the west with a view of Lake Panorama and a patio on the east with a view of the golf course. Restrooms on the north will have entrances from both the interior and exterior so these facilities can remain open when the rest of the building is closed.

The snack shop section on the south side of the building includes more cooler and counter space than the old facility. Plans are being made to offer additional food options such as breakfast items and pizza. The building will have heat and air conditioning for year-round use, and will be available for rental for private events during the off-season.

Because of the addition of a basement, plus the committee’s hope to be able to purchase new tables and chairs, an ice machine and other furnishings, donations still are being solicited. There are individual, in-kind and corporate-giving options. Those who give $500 or more will be honored on a color display in the new building.

The corporate giving option is geared to businesses and groups interested in signing a term contract for tax-deductible advertising on the LPN golf course. Sponsors for nine golf holes have been established, leaving nine holes still available for sponsorships. Businesses interested in advertising, or individuals or businesses interested in discussing in-kind contributions, can contact Contner at 641-755-2301, or Judy.Contner@supportlpa.com.

Checks should be made payable to the LPN Building Fund and are deposited in a special account designated for the new building. Donations may be dropped off at the LPN Conference Center reception area or the LPA office. Or mailed to the LPN at 5071 Clover Ridge Road, Panora, Iowa, 50216.

Lake Panorama National 2008 Adopt-a-bed Volunteer Project:

Spring is in the air. Exciting things are happening on the golf course! It’s time to get one more project going again: the volunteer adopt-a-bed for the tee boxes on LPNGC.

It was such a success last year, we are going to continue the project again in 2008. We are so thankful for the fantastic job the volunteers did, they worked hard and their effort was noticed by golfers playing our course. And now that they have laid the “ground work” on their beds, we are giving the original volunteers the option of continuing to work on their same tee box again. If you want to continue again this year let me know (call me at home: 755-2924, or e-mail
wollner@netins.net ). We would be happy to have you back. But sometimes things change, so if you unable to continue working on your bed, that is OK. We will just put unclaimed beds up for adoption again. Again, let me know so I can put the word out that we are looking for new volunteers.

We appreciate all the work done last year! Here is a list of those that adopted beds in 2007. If you see any of them, tell them thanks for getting the project off to such a great start!

#1) Nancy & Bob McCleeary / Sandy & Frank Teale
#2) Carol & Keith Peterson / Ron & Glenda Bruggeman
#3) Janice & Dale Hochreiter
#4 Men’s & Forward) Shirley & Kent Stephensen / Pam & Don Parsons
#5) Men’s & Forward) Darwin & Janet Luing
#6) Sandy Mathison / Jan & Gene Hardy
#7) Darwin & Janet Luing
#8) Barb & Mark Moore
#10 SR) Ann Witowski
#10 Forward) Cindy & Mark Sanger
#11 Forward) Mary & Larry Hills
#12 SR & Forward) Mary & Larry Hills
#14) John & Susan Brookshaw / Mark & Fay Petersen
#15) Carla & Tim Fitzgerald
#17) Marion & Bob Malone
Conf Ctr – pro shop side) Janice & Dale Hochreiter

I want to give a special thanks to Ron Bruggeman for hauling rock to all the tees that needed it and Janice Hochreiter for stepping up to take the Conf Ctr since that area has no irrigation and needed water carried to it all summer.

Happy planting,
Barb Wollner
